Welcome!

If you're thinking about taking a cruise you're in the right place.  If you have already been on a cruise or have one coming up, you're in the right place too.  In these pages I hope we can answer your questions about everything you need to know to get you started, get ready and get to sea.  A good travel agent is an invaluable source.  Being in the know yourself can only help the process go smoother, creating a true vacation of a lifetime.  Cruises are generally the best vacation value, here's why

  • On a cruise you can "Do it all or nothing at all"  It's YOUR cruise
  • There is a good chance that you will meet people just like yourself
  • You can visit several destinations in a very efficient manner
  • Cruises offer travel in an environment that's safe and comfortable

I suggest that you click on the topics on the left to begin your voyage into the world of cruising.  If any of your questions are still unanswered email me, Chris@LifeIsCruising.com , I'll find out what you want to know ok?

    Happy Cruising

 Crash Course: Cruise Lingo
All The Nautical Terms In The World
Here are all the Nautical Terms (ship lingo) you could ever use.  Actually you don't need to know a fourth of these to communicate with seasoned cruisers as though you had been born at sea.

 Princess vs Carnival
"Which cruise line should I choose? "  That's a big question that comes up a lot.  This site has a bunch of information about cruising in general and some specific to different cruise lines.  Mostly though we concentrate on Princess and Carnival.  But which one is the best for you?

Some easy to identify differences include:
  • Princess Grand Class ships have Skywalkers- a nightclub that blows away anything Carnival ever thought of having
  • Princess does a better job of breaking up huge, open deck space into smaller more intimate areas
  • Carnival has FunVision, an in-cabin interactive system that lets you view your shipboard charge account, buy shore excursions and watch pay-per-view movies
  • Princess has better, sometimes excellent food but lacks consistency
  • You can buy cartons of cigarettes on Princess and they hold them until the end of the cruise, on Carnival you can have them when you buy them
  • You can buy bottles of booze on Carnival and they hold them until the end of the cruise, on Princess you can order bottles from room service and have them right now
  • Carnival has an incorrect reputation for being a big drunken party all the time (not any more), Princess has an incorrect reputation for catering to boring old people (that baton has been passed to Holland America, right or wrong)
  • Carnival has a better kids program- Princess' is good but inconsistent from ship to ship
  • Pricing is competitive, comparing numbers to numbers Carnival will come out less expensive but Princess can be a better value
  • Princess ships all seem to have a similar layout and decor, each Carnival ship has a different theme
  • Princess rules embarkation after you get into the terminal, Carnival is trying but still not there
  • Carnival rules embarkation line management , Princess seems like it's the first time they've ever done it, every time we've boarded.
  • Carnival has the reputation for the best shows, I rate both lines the same
  • Princess sails to more places
  • Carnival management is totally accessible, good luck emailing somebody important at Princess
  • Princess employs more muted tones and promotes a subdued but semi-elegant ambiance, Carnival is very glitzy, Vegas style with lots of neon on older ships, not so much on the newer ones
  • Stand in the middle of the atrium on any Grand Class Princess ship and you might not be sure which one you're on, Each Carnival ship has a distinct theme and individual personality
  • After trying both lines I feel like Princess has more moaning, complaining passengers. Carnival's passengers are more there to have fun. Age is not a factor in either group.
These are the things that jump out at me as being different. You be the judge if each one is a good thing or a bad thing.
 Port or Starboard?

What's a good way to remember which side of the ship is Port and which one is Starboard?

On Princess that's easy.  Chances are there is  different color carpet to help you remember.  This really helps when you first step off the elevator. Here's a catchy phrase to help you remember:

Port wine is RED and should be LEFT alone
Red being the colors on the left side of the ship as well

If you pay real close attention to other ships at sea you'll notice a green light on the starboard side and a red light on the port side of the ship.  That lets other ships (and us too) know which direction another ship is headed- important information if you are on an iceberg and see the Titanic in the distance.

 Celebrity vs Princess

I have sailed and like both lines but there are some differences, especially when comparing the two ships you have to choose from.  Let's compare Crown Princes with Celebrity Summit:

  • Year built: Crown 2006, Summit 2001
  • Crown layout reflects all the new bells and whistles
  • Both have fabulous Eucalyptus lotion. I think the same company makes both
  • Princess is fully edocs, Celebrity can if you want to but you don't have to
  • A whole lot more guests (3700+) on Crown compared to Summit (2038) and you'll notice it
  • Celebrity you choose how you tip, Princess adds them automatically
  • Client?le (IMHO) about the same
  • Anytime Dining on Crown not available on Summit
  • Way better and faster Internet access, terminal and wireless, on Summit
  • Concierge Class on Celebrity not available on Princess
  • Extra suite goodies pile up faster on Celebrity. Princess mini-suites= not much extra
  • You will miss your past guest status on X if you have a combined 17 sailings
  • Princess onboard Future Cruise Credit program well organized, easy to use and gives more bang for the buck
  • Food (IMHO) very good on both.
  • Steaks on X room service menu but not on Princess
  • Princess room service fast, X not so much
  • Traditional "by the course" dining moreso on X. Princess' "large plate" and "small plate" system offer similar products and service style but more flexibility.
  • Princess lush and plush robes superior to deluxe waffle robes on X
  • X deluxe bedding perhaps a bit more comfy
  • Comparing slogans "Be treated famously" to "Escape Completely", Escape Completely hits the mark consistently and combined with C.R.U.I.S.E program is more than a slogan. (much like Carnival really does have the "Funships") We never feel famous on X.
  • We lose money about the same in either ship/lines casino. Neither give us free drinks like NCL (sometimes)
  • Princess does have Ocean Players Club: lose $500 and get a t-shirt. Maybe.
  • Princess management easily accessible. Good luck emailing the boss of X
  • Princess prices negotiable (for now), not so much on X
  • Princess Bon Voyage gift selection blows away X and individual items a much better value
  • X guest relations able to move mountains
  • X provides baby food and supplies for infants
